Roulette is one of those games which epitomise the casino experience. Easily the one with the most glamour involved, roulette has been delighting players for centuries. Its roots are thought to date back to Greco-Roman time, but it is Blaise Pascal, the eminent 17th-century mathematician, who is often credited with the invention of the roulette wheel. Over time, what started as a simple spin of the wheel has now become one of the most sought-after games in any casino, and there are now ample opportunities to try different varieties of roulette casino games. It’s up to you to decide which one you prefer.

Basics of roulette

Players choose which number the ball will land on, the ball is tossed, the wheel spins, and the ball falls on a square. The challenge lies in how to bet. When you play online, roulette wheel bet options include the inside bets (straight, split, street, and corner) and outside bets (column, dozen, red, black, odd, even, high or low). Not all bets are available on all variants, so when you play online roulette wheel game, be sure you familiarise yourself with what you can and can’t play.

European Roulette

This is one of the most popular forms of roulette. The wheel is numbered 1-36, plus a slot for 0. You play colour, inside or outside, corner or column, and individual or group bets. The odds of winning each are different, so before you play roulette online, it would pay for you to familiarise yourself with the various odds.

American Roulette

This is similar to European Roulette but includes an extra slot, for double 0. If you are the sort of person who uses a system of numbers when deciding where to place your bets, it is important to remember that the layout of the numbers is different. So if you are used to betting on 2, for example, be careful that you don’t go automatically for where “2” is on the European wheel – you will be disappointed!

French Roulette

While the game in its French form is similar to the European or American variants, the principal difference in the French roulette wheel is in its layout. Like the European variant, there is only one slot for “0”, but the colour scheme also differs, with all the slots being in white, rather than red or black. It also features “La Partage” rule, which allows for some punters to win half their money back if the ball lands on “0”.

Mini Roulette

Just as much fun, but mini roulette only involves 13 numbers, including one slot for 0. It also imposes a version of the La Partage rule, meaning there are some benefits even when the ball falls into the single 0 slot.

3D Roulette

This version is no different from other online roulette games, with one exception – when playing the 3D version, it feels far more like being in a real casino, because of its impressive graphics.

Which to choose?

Your choice of what roulette variant to play depends on what you what to get out of it. Because roulette is entirely a game of chance, there is no one bet which is more likely to win than any other, but there are small variations in the likelihood of winning depending on which version you choose. However they are all exciting, and for all those aficionados of online gambling in New Zealand, there are fortunately plenty of choices.
